Message from the Board – Al Franklin, President

Now that the holidays are over, we can get back to our everyday activities.  The weather has slowed down the progress on our pavilion.  Hope things will change for the better.

The ACC will be making a survey of the vacant property in the community to determine if they need cleaning, like bush hogging, removal of dead trees, etc.

This month there will be supports installed under the POA office floor to keep it from sinking.  Then we will start the process of remodeling the office to be more user friendly.  Please bear with us during this time of construction.

Remember that the annual meeting of The Carolina Shores Property Owners Association (CSPOA) is February 2, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at the POA clubhouse.

Finally, I want to welcome Linda Rugg back to the POA office staff.  As many of you know Linda was on the staff before and has returned to replace Kim when she leaves.

ACC Corner – Joe Martere, ACC Chairperson

A happy and healthy New Year to ALL!

Remember that all signs, of any type, require approval from the ACC by applying for the sign permit before placing a sign on your property.

Please remember that ANY work done on the exterior of your home requires prior ACC approval. This includes, but is not limited to, painting your home the same color, replacing roof shingles of same color, adding shutters or gutters.

As we stated in last month’s article, we are in the process of inspecting vacant lots that are due for bush hogging/cleaning.  If your unimproved lot needs this work done, you will receive a letter from the ACC.  Please respond to the ACC within the time frame specified in the letter.  If needed, the ACC has a list of qualified, insured contractors who can do the job.  Please call or e-mail the ACC for this information.

The ACC office is manned Tuesday through Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. until noon.  If you have any questions, please stop by the office.  You may also reach the ACC by e-mail at:  acc@carolinashores.net.

Thank you, Joe Martere ACC Chairman

Tennis News – Bob Anthony

Close up view of tennis racket and balls

Open tennis continues in this cold weather.  We hope the rain will stay away for a while.  If you are interested in playing tennis, we meet at our tennis courts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:00 a.m.  All members (and guests) in good standing are welcome to join us.  Just show up and all will get to play.  All skill levels are welcome.

Low Impact Chair Aerobics Mary Timothy

LOW IMPACT CHAIR AEROBICS is at 9:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays.  This exercise class is excellent for those that have difficulty with a regular aerobics class.  This class will include weight lifting and core strengthening while sitting.  Leg lifts will be done while holding on to a chair and then will be followed up with low impact movement without a chair.  Weights will be needed.  I suggest starting with one-pound weights.  Without investing in weights, bottles of water, cans and such can be used if they fit comfortably in your hands.  Ankle weights are optional.  Come to get in shape and have fun.  Contact Mary Timothy for more information at mtmothy@atmc.net.

Recreation Committee – Sue O’Reilly

Free Bingo Balls On A Card Background Stock Photography - 36854222The Recreation Committee met in early January to discuss events for the upcoming year; the first of which will be BINGO at the POA clubhouse on Sunday, February 10, at 3:00 p.m.  The cost will be $1.00 per card with lots of fun and prizes!  Please bring a snack, finger food, or light refreshment to share and BYOB if you want something other than soda or water, which will be provided.  Bingo has become one of our most popular social events, so come on out and join the fun!

Next up will be Trivia!  Join us at the POA clubhouse on Sunday, March 10, at 3:00 p.m. for another fun afternoon of mental exercise!  Form a team of six or come and we'll include you with other neighbors to form a team and collaborate on answering questions in a variety of categories.  It's amazing what inconsequential information we know - or don't know!  Bring some munchies to share and your own beverage of choice.  Water and soda will be provided.

Additional gatherings will be announced shortly; please watch your bulletin and email for updates!  We are also excited about utilizing the new POA pavilion in the Spring for several fun events.

This year's members of the Recreation Committee are: Charlotte Csernecky, Joyce Disano, Barbara Hartnett, Charlene Hawryluk, Donna Klaich, Nancy Karnolt, Sue O'Reilly, Betty Robertson, Mary Ann Williams, Chairperson, Jeanne Zalasko, and board liaison, Sue Hensler.  We are looking forward to providing many enjoyable opportunities for our residents to meet, greet and share good times!

Garden Club Joanne Bendy

February is the Garden Club's annual fundraiser month.  This year we will be having a Fashion Show and Catered Luncheon on Wednesday, February 13, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the POA clubhouse.  Featured fashions are from Belk.  There will also be a silent auction and 50/50 raffle.

Tickets are $18 and all profits raised will go towards scholarships for West Brunswick High School seniors and beautification projects.

This event is open to everyone, not just Garden Club members, so please invite your friends and neighbors to join us.

If you haven't yet purchased your tickets, you still have some time.  Please contact Betty Johnston at 269-9377 or Diane Grolimund at 579-5872.  Seating is limited, so don't delay!

Our program for the March 13 meeting is "Propagation 101", which will be presented by three Brunswick County Master Gardeners.  Learn from the experts!

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundThe Carolina Shores Book Discussion Group met on Friday, January 18, in the POA library.  This month we discussed two books:  How to Find Love in a Bookshop by Veronica Henry and The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah.  Although the books were completely different in nature, the group had high praise for both.

How to Find Love in a Bookshop is a cozy, feel-good story about the effect the beloved (now deceased) owner of a bookstore in a small English village had on the town’s inhabitants.  A delightful cast of characters come together to help keep the bookshop from closing after the owner’s death.

The Great Alone is a beautifully written, but very intense story about the desperate family of a Viet Nam veteran who suffers from PTSD.  Seeking a new beginning in the near-isolated wilderness of Alaska, they soon discover that the hardships they encounter in their new environment are less perilous than the threats from within their own family.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, February 15, at 10:00 a.m.  We’ll be discussing The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney and/or Atomic City Girls by Janet Beard.  If you live in Carolina Shores and love to read, please join us!

Knit ‘n Natter – Diana Mardall

Did you know Carolina Shores has an evening knitting/crocheting/needlework group?  We meet every other Monday at 6.30 p.m. in the POA boardroom.  If you knit, crochet or do other needlework, stop by and join us.  We’d love to see new faces.

The group meets and shares patterns and expertise.  We work on a variety of projects including sweaters, cardigans, afghans, shawls, cross stitch, arm knitting (that was a blast!), etc.  Usually we even have dessert!

Our meetings in February will be on the 4th and 18th at 6.30 p.m.

If you have any questions, email me at limeylady70@gmail.com or call me at 910-575-7804.

POA Library – Sue O’Reilly

Due to the Garden Club Fashion Show on Wednesday, February 13, which will be held in our POA clubhouse, the POA library will be closed from 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 12 and all-day Wednesday, February 13, so that the area can be used for their function.  Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Lillian is from Long Island, NY where she was a full-time homemaker.  When her late husband retired, they moved to Greece for a few years to be near relatives.  Then came back to the states and had a house in Cary, NC.  They went back to Greece, but felt the lifestyle was not for them.  Again, returned to the states and they rented a home on Carolina Shores Parkway.  After her husband passed, she rented this house on Sunrise Ct. and has been there for the last eight years. When the opportunity arose, Lillian purchased this charming home and closed on it in December.  She loves to read and like many of us, likes the feel of a book in her hand. She also enjoys exercising, maintaining her home and working in her yard.

If you recently purchased a home in Carolina Shores and have not been greeted by the Welcoming Committee, please contact Flo at 575-6243 or dfp324@atmc.net.

Care Team – Beverly Rouse

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgThe Care Team now has 23 people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me.  If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know.  When a call for help comes to me, I reach out to the members on NextDoor.  I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get!  It really doesn't take much to volunteer.  An occasional ride, help with a small chore at home, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.

So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone.  You don't have to be on NextDoor to request help.

MCj04398570000[1]Our January meeting on the 8th had a lighter than usual turnout due to colds and other bugs going around.

Because we will not be able to hold the February meeting on the usual second Tuesday of the month, we decided to move the February meeting to the 19th of the month. This change will be for that meeting only. At that time, we will be collecting the yearly dues of $5.00.

We would like to have any new single resident or long timer join the group.  Anyone interested in checking us out, please call 575-2339 and we will be glad to have a member pick you up.  Each member brings a dish to share and this along with the friendly and informative conversation makes for a very pleasant evening. Hope to see you there.

Our next meeting will be on February 19 at 5:00 p.m. at the POA clubhouse
